“I grew up in country Victoria with a menagerie of animals. Becoming a Veterinarian was almost just an extension of my personality coupled with my fascination and love for all creatures.
I graduated from the University of Queensland in 2005 and moved to Rockhampton to pursue mixed animal work. I quickly developed a reputation for seeing all the weird and wonderful cases including birds, exotics and pocket pets. I worked closely with Rockhampton Wildlife and Rescue for years where I removed multiple fish hooks from the oesophagus’s of cormorants, casted bird leg fractures, pouch repaired a kangaroo who’d been hurt following a cyclone and more!
My large animal cases were just as diverse. I did an advanced equine dentistry course and a turtle and dugong necropsy course. This led to some very unexpected cases such as trimming overgrown tusks from a huge pet pig called Wilson, to attending a beached pygmy sperm whale and her calf on a remote beach in Byfield national park.
In 2017, I traveled to South Africa on a Veterinary Studies tour. I then relocated to Newcastle and started working for Veterinary Practice Partners as the Head Veterinarian at Dr Paws Kotara. I have now progressed into my favourite role of my career to date; Veterinary Mentor of the New Graduate Program for VPP clinics. This position allows me to share the wealth of practical experience acquired over my career and most importantly be the change I want to see. Our work as vets is exciting, fun and rewarding but it can also be challenging and having mentorship support goes a long way. I am proud to be working for Dr Adam Russell who has created this role to support and nurture our vets and clinics.”
